Did you install XenGallery after Social Groups was installed? I had this problem with XFMG, and it wouldn't load the Gallery. I had to uninstall the Gallery and Social Groups, Install XFMG first, then reinstall Social Groups. Something to do with the "default" album selected in Social Groups at install.

This was on a new installation, so it wasn't a big deal.

I work with both addons quite for a while and did just update both.
But it is ok, the update to 2.6.4 did it and all runs fine again.

Yes, you can moderate new groups. This is done by category, so you can moderate new groups of one category and not moderate groups of a second/third/fourth category.
