I still think it would be great to have a countdown so you can see how much space you have left to type. I feel this is important as if you are a member of two XenForo forums that use Groups then the character count setting could be different, as it's admin defined.
Having this immediate feedback means you won't accidentally write an essay, only to find out that it's way over the character count when you go to submit it.
