I think it is necessary to give the users more info on the group privacy. You had it very nicely done in 2.4.6 but I also agree there does not need to be an hover overlay or much more elements.
So how about an Icon, which is also a button, where the group admin can change the group privacy?
See the example of the possible design, which shows the indicator for "secret" (just as example)
