I created a new album on my group, and despite XenGallery default album settings of "add to album: only me", it was set to "everyone" in the group album and I couldn't change it!

No. It as designed. The albums which created in groups should be public for all members in group can view. It is ignore privacy of albums

But any group/site member can also *add* pictures to it, not just album creator. This is normal too?
